How to Care For Parlour Palm

Collected since the Victorian era, the Parlour Palm has long been admired and traditionally displayed as the centrepiece of the most impressive room in the house - the parlour - giving it its well-known name. Native to the rainforests of Mexico and Guatemala, the Parlour Palm thrives where other plants struggle, making it the perfect choice for bringing a touch of the tropics indoors. It remains as popular today as it has always been, thanks to its beautifully lush foliage and delicate, elegant appearance.

The Parlour Palm thrives in bright, indirect light where sunlight is diffused. It can also adapt to medium to low light conditions, making it a great choice for various indoor spaces. However, avoid placing it in areas with no natural light or in direct sunlight, as this may scorch the leaves.

The Parlour Palm grows slowly and steadily, reaching around 60cm in height within a few years and ultimately growing up to 180cm tall and 90cm wide. As it produces new leaves, it may shed one or two older ones from the bottom. Even after adjusting to its environment, occasional leaf loss is normal. Growth speed depends on several factors, with light exposure being the most important. Lower light levels will slow its growth.

Parlor Palms prefer temperatures between 60 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit, which is similar to the temperatures found in their natural habitat. They tend to be more cold-tolerant than other tropical plants and can survive in temperatures as low as 50 degrees for short periods. Parlor Palms can live in average humidity, as well. Unlike other tropical plants, maintaining a highly humid environment is not a necessity. However, they may grow better and thrive in a more humid environment.
